What Is (and ISN'T) Memorial Jewellery

When it Comes to Memorial Jewellery, it's Important to Know What Your Buying

Can you spot the difference?

This post was prompted by an email a couple of weeks ago.  The lady who wrote was quite concerned that she had purchased what she thought was a memorial pendant only to find out later it was actually a pendant made to hold perfume, ie a 'perfume pendant'.

Using a perfume pendant as memorial jewellery isn't ideal but it happens and this is acceptable only if the person buying it knows that it was made for perfume, not memorials, and knows this before they buy it.

While it appears to be a rare practice, this is the third time we've been contacted after someone has bought a perfume pendant which was sold as as genuine memorial jewellery.  What's more, they were sold at the same price as memorial jewellery (which costs substantially more to produce) so these families have paid too much for what they've bought.

So what is the difference and what should you know?

The first point to note is that memorial jewellery is made to funeral industry quality standards for the precise purpose of storing cremation ashes and memorial items.  Perfume and other pendants have been made for an entirely different use.

As a customer it can be difficult to tell the difference, especially when the jewellery is shown 'closed' as in the image above.  A tell-tale sign of a perfume pendant though is often the presence of a long dabbing stick inside the pendant and it looks similar to this:

While beautifully suited to their purpose of holding some perfume inside, they haven't been made as fine cremation urns.  It's important to note that the 'dabbing stick' inside can often be trimmed off by the seller to disguise their real purpose.

Memorial Jewellery, when purchased from a reputable business, should be guaranteed to be genuine, that is custom-made for cremation ashes and memorials.

It's a really good idea to check with the seller if you're not sure - they should happily disclose whether the jewellery is genuine memorial jewellery, a perfume pendant or jewellery made for another purpose.  We've found most people selling these actually describe them as purfume pendants and readily disclose this information to their customers.

Memorial jewellery will no doubt be one of the most important purchases you ever make and making sure you are buying the genuine product is essential.

TIP #1: A quick search of images using the search term 'silver perfume pendant' or 'perfume pendant' in Google will show you some more examples.

TIP #2: A perfume pendant should cost substantially less than a genuine memorial pendant.
